Party Chairman Mahantha Thakur in a statement claimed desired goal of the opinion collection will not be met if the campaign is continued under present circumstances. The statement, however, does not categorically mention the protests by the Tharu community.
"We arrived at a conclusion that the opinion collection campaign should be suspended until the situation returns to normal," said party spokesperson Sarvendra Nath Shukla. "Delaying the campaign by a few days will be of less important than denying thousands of people from taking part in the opinion collection campaign."
He said the CA members deployed for collecting public opinion are facing serious hardships to visit the villages. "Some of the members have traveled miles in bicycles because of transport strikes," he said. "There is curfew in many places and the CA members have not been able to enter the villages because of the strikes."
Shukla said there are others problems related to language and terminologies used in the questionnaire but the members and CA Secretariat staff are trying to simplify them. "But most important factor is if we don’t stop the campaign, our goal of making a new constitution through people’s participation will not be attained.
