Piotr Morawski suffered fatal injuries Tuesday when he fell into a crevass at an altitude of around 5,500 metres (18,000 feet), said Marcin Jozefowicz of Poland’s TOPR mountain rescue service.
The ascent of Dhaulagiri, which at 8,167 metres (26,788 feet) is the world’s seventh-highest mountain, was the first stage in a TOPR expedition to the neighbouring 8,156-metre (26,752-foot) Mansalu.
Morawski and his Slovak colleague Peter Hamor aimed to find a new route up the western face of Mansalu.
