Police to crack down on flesh trade in Itahari

ITAHARI, April 11: Following complaints from locals, the local administration is planning a crackdown on restaurants promoting flesh trade in Itahari.



The District Police Office, Sunsari decided to take the move after an all-party meeting in Itahari on Tuesday urged the police to take action against restaurant operators promoting flesh trade. [break]Local leaders, civil society activists, human rights activists have also pledged support to the DPO in the crackdown on flesh trade.



The DPO has said that it would start its campaign from Tuesday. “If any police officer is found providing protection to such restaurant operators, we will take strong action against him,” said SP Ganesh Bahadur Thapa.



Meanwhile, Chief District Officer Laxman Kumar Thapa said women involved in prostitution should be encouraged to engage in other income-generating activities.



In a bid to discourage prostitution, Itahari municipality will also monitor the restaurants to see if they have acquired permission, said Chief Executive Officer of the municipality Ganesh Raj Karki.



Radha Bhattarai, a rights activist, said the cabin restaurants have tarnished the image of Itahari municipality by overtly been running the flesh trade.
