BUTWAL, Feb 10: Police on Saturday arrested five persons and seized more than 50 kilograms of hashish while they were taking the contraband to Butwal from Baglung.

The arrested have been identified as Sabitra Buda, 28, of Thawang VDC-5 in Rolpa; Jumli Shrish, 55, and Hira Pun, 54, of Ranasingkiten in Baglung; Rim Bahadur Chettri, 33, of Pandavkhani VDC- 1 in Baglung; and Bhawana Gurung, 32, of Harjang VDC-6 in Rolpa, according to DSP Raj Kumar Baidawar of APO.

“We recovered more than 10 kilograms of hashish from each of them during the search of their belongings,” informed DSP Baidawar of APO. He also said the arrested in their statement recorded by police have said that they were smuggling hashish from Baglung after they were promised Rs 5,000 per head per trip.

However, a preliminary investigation by police has shown that Sabitra Buda is the main drug peddler while the others are porters, the APO said. The police investigation has also revealed that Buda has been smuggling hashish from different villages of Baglung district to India for a long time.

Police busted the racket after three persons were caught with 19 kilograms of hashish from Ithari seven days ago. The police came to know that the drug peddlers were lately using Butwal-Ithari route for smuggling the contraband to India.
