Police also arrested Shankar Tamang, 35, of Gauradaha VDC-9 of Jhapa, on the charge of abducting the girl.[break]
Tamang had brought along sweets and other food items to lure Anju and he took her with him from the marketplace on March 8, police informed.
Chaulendra Adhikari, a police sub inspector at the Area police Offfice Belbari, informed that Anju, the daughter of Jiban Rai, of Danghihat VDC-5 was abducted by Tamang, who found the girl walking alone in the market.
"Anju´s parents filed missing child complaint with police after they were unable to find her at the market. While searching for her, we learnt that she was abducted," said Adhikari.
Police started a search for Tamang on the basis of the information provided by the people in the market. Some people in the market had seen Tamang with the child. After three days of search, police found that Tamang was from Guradaha in Jhapa.
"We contacted the District Police Office Jhapa and were able to rescue the girl from a farmland near his home. Tamang was found hiding there with the girl," SI Adhikari further said. He also informed that the girl has been handed over to her parents and a case has been registered against Tamang on abduction charge.
However, Tamang, in his statement to the police, has said he took the girl as she looked like his own daughter. Although Tamang took the girl with him, he did not ask for any ransom from the girl´s parents. Police have yet to find out the motive behind the abduction.
