Police under pressure from locals and rights groups had raided the houses of the suspects and made the arrests.[break]
Earlier, the Informal Sector Service Center (Insec) and Asian Human Rights Commission had submitted a memorandum to the then prime minister demanding immediate action against those involved.
The culprits had entered the house of the victim under the pretext of drinking water and raped the girl. The victim has recently completed her SLC.
According to the Superintendent of Police (SP) Dipendra Chand, those arrested are Shankaman Moktan, 54, of Sipali Chilaune VDC-3; Akash Tamang, 20 and Pancha Bahadur Shyangtang, 25, of Methinkot VDC-9; Ram Bahadur Shyangtang Tamang, 18 and Krishna BK of Shikharambote VDC-9; and Kumar BK, 22, of Shikharambote VDC-8.
Police said, Krishna BK, who is from Shikharambote VDC-8, was arrested from his residence in Bouddha, Kathmandu on Sunday afternoon while the five were arrested on Friday evening.
During the raid, police recovered two mobile phones, a khukuri, and Rs 15,000, which they had stolen. Police had a few days ago arrested Janukadevi Thapa of Banepa Municipality-8 who they believe is also connected with the rape incident.
Police were able to capture the culprits from the call details saved in the the mobile phone belonging to Janukadevi. Police have found that Janukadevi is the former wife of the victim´s brother-in-law Bishnu Thapa.
"Thapa had divorced Janukadevi last year and remarried the victim´s sister and in the course of divorce they had sold a house and shared the money. Of the money, Bishnu´s new wife had kept Rs 500,000 at her maternal home and Janukadevi had sent the hoodlums to rob the money when the rape incident occurred," Deputy Superintendent of Police Krishna Adhikari said.
Adhikari said the arrested have admitted to the crime so they will be tried for rape, attempted murder and robbery.
