Police, army deserters vandalize vehicles in capital, beat journalist

KATHMANDU, March 8: Agitating deserters of security wings vandalized dozens of vehicles in Ratnapark, Bagbazaar and Jamal areas in the capital Sunday morning. [break]



The vandalized vehicles include two police vans and a motorcycle of traffic police. The agitators also stoned and partially torched a vehicle (Ba 1 Ga 2222) belonging to the Armed Police Force. A vehicle belonging to the Canadian Cooperation Office (10 CD 5) was also vandalized.

According to an eyewitness, the agitating former police and army personnel vandalized micro-buses queuing up at Ratnapark and a few vehicles at Bagbazar and Jamal areas in the capital. The agitators said the protest turned violent only after police intervened to disperse a planned rally. The vandalism by the former security personnel dispersed a women´s rally walking past Ratnapark area.



The APF personnel on duty beat up a photo journalist Niraj Sapkota asking him not to take any pictures as they started taking action against the agitators.



Deputy Superintendent of Police Bikash Sherstha at Metropolitan Traffic Police Division, Ramshah Path, confirmed that the agitators torched a police van and vandalized another police van and a motorcycle belonging to traffic police. "The exact number of vehicles vandalized is yet to come," he said.



Individuals who deserted Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and Nepal Army during the Maoist conflict have been protesting for the past several weeks in the capital demanding reinstatement.
