Pokharel elected NPU chairman amidst protest

ITAHARI, March 23: Nepal Press Union (NPU) on Wednesday ´unanimously elected´ the executive committee under the chairmanship of Kiran Pokharel amidst protests.



Lilaraj Khanal, who was named as an executive member, said that he would not assume the post as it was handpicked by some leaders without going into election.[break]



A candidate for president Ram Prasad Dahal issued a press release protesting the ´undemocratic practices.´



The seventh national general convention concluded on Wednesday. NPU is a sister-organization of Nepali Congress.



Speaking at the concluding session, NC central member Arjun Narsingh KC informed the gathering about the unanimous nomination of Pokharel.



The general convention decided to pick Kiran as the Union President unanimously considering that consensus and unity within the Union is the need of the hour since the nation is passing through hard times.



Despite objection from some councilors, KC announced the unanimous nomination of Badri Sigdel and Gangadhar Parajuli as the Union senior vice presidents.



Similarly, Shiva Lamsal has been elected as the Union general secretary while Anita Bindu and Hemanta Kafle as the vice chairpersons.



Likewise, Santosh Neupane and Bhuwan Bhatta have been elected as the secretaries, Bijay Santoshi Rai and Bala Adhikari as the deputy secretaries and Ishwari Ojha as the treasurer.



The convention picked Shekhar Regmi as the eastern region coordinator , Deepak Acharya as central region coordinator, Hom Lamsal as the Bagmati coordinator, Ramesh Poudel as the western region coordinator, Yub Raj Shrestha as the mid western region coordinator and Bhisma Ojha as the far-western region coordinator.



The general convention has also elected 44 more working committee members representing the all the ethnic communities and minority communities.



On the occasion, the immediate past president Samir Jung Shah thanked all the people who helped conclude the general convention successfully.



Nepali Congress leaders Dr. Minendra Rizal, Dilendra Prasad Badu, Shovakar Parajuli and President of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) Dharmendra Jha, among other speakers, expressed their views at the concluding function of the general convention, stressing on the need of creating public opinion in support of peace and constitution writing.
