He said the parties differ on whether the prime minister should quit after forging consensus or prior to that.[break]
“Some parties have said the resignation should come beforehand while others have said they would forcibly remove me from the post,” the prime minister said at the CPN-UML´s parliamentary party meeting on Tuesday. “But our party´s central committee has cautiously decided that I should resign only after the parties come up with an alternative and we are committed to that.”
The prime minister said he is holding talks with other political parties with regard to accomplishing the twin tasks of concluding the peace process and writing the new constitution and also about formation of a new government.
Prime Minister Khanal indicated that forging consensus among the parties had become more challenging due to the deepening intra-party feuds within the major political parties. “I am holding talks with other parties but the Nepali Congress (NC) is divided into two factions and the Maoist party five,” he told UML lawmakers. “We need to stand united at this critical juncture.”
Earlier, UML Spokesperson Pradip Gyawali had urged the prime minister to take initiative toward forging consensus on forming new government to show that UML leadership doesn´t want to cling on to power.
On annual budget
Several lawmakers including Gyawali, Rabindra Adhikari and Yamlal Kandel suggested to the prime minister to introduce the new budget on time. “The parties and the government must take the issue of introducing the new budget seriously because delay in bringing the annual budget may invite serious financial crisis in the country,” Adhikari said at the meeting.
