KATHMANDU, March 19: National Security Council (NSC) marked its 14th anniversary on Wednesday without having held even a single meeting in three years.

NSC, the apex body to advise the government on national security issues, had remained incomplete since Sushil Koirala became prime minister on February 10 last year. The body got full shape just around six weeks ago after the goverment appointed three members.

NSC Secretariat organized a function at Singha Durbar to mark the anniversary with an announcement of restructuring the council into a constitutional body to cope with "growing security challenges".

Prime Minister Koirala, who is also chairman of the NSC, addressing the ceremony said, "We will give the NSC necessary mandate through the new constitution to deal with unique needs and security challenges."

According to Defense Secretary Ishwori Paudel, PM Koirala has directed the secretariat to expedite preparation for a meeting to make the council more effective.

Home Minister, Chief of Nepal Army, ministers, head of security agencies among others attended the anniversary function.
