KATHMANDU, Nov 14: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has said it was necessary to give a thought to the practicability of the inter-constituency voting.

During a meeting with the stakeholders held at her office in Singha Durbar on Thursday, PM Karki viewed even the Nepalis living abroad deserve voting rights. "Political parties and candidates undergo financial burden while ferrying the voters from cities to their respective constituencies, resulting in corruption. Considering this, a meaningful initiative is imperative," she said.

The traditional way of conducting election dampens the aspirations of Gen Z, she said, underlining the need to take innovative moves to give a message.

The PM further said, "Let's establish a system. However, a consensus at the political level is essential for it. All sides' preparation is necessary, while the young generation is digitally literate. It needs acknowledgement from political leadership."

The meeting was also attended by Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal, officials at the Home Ministry, Law Ministry, Policy Research Institute and Department of National ID and Civil Registration.

A presentation was made during the meeting based on research conducted by the Policy Research Institute on the viability of voting rights to Nepalis living abroad.

On the occasion, Home Minister Aryal viewed government was under pressure to do something new, a stride from the past practice in the election. "It is an election government. So, past mistakes should be corrected and we should move forward accordingly," he observed.

Following the discussion, a study team has been formed with representatives from ministries, the election commission and the research institute.
