KATHMANDU, Jan 15: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has marked the beginning of water diversion and redistribution by drinking Melamchi water falling from the golden stream on the Prime Minister's Office premises at Singha Durbar. Melamchi water was first distributed in the valley in Chaitra 2077 BS.

Secretary at the Ministry of Drinking Water, Suresh Acharya, said that Melamchi water would be gradually distributed in Anamnagar, Minbhawan, Mahankal Chaur, Rigani, Bhaktapur, Khumaltar, Balaju and Bansbari areas.

In his address to the inauguration of Melamchi drinking water diversion and redistribution held at Singha Durbar this morning, PM Dahal said the second phase of Yangri and Larke rivers diversion will be taken ahead with a specific action plan for sustainable arrangement of drinking water.

On the occasion, PM Dahal stressed the need to resolve the issue of drinking water given its growing demand with the rise in the population of the Kathmandu Valley.

"The government is effortful to provide safe and sustainable drinking water service. The construction of the head works of the Melamchi drinking water project will be completed soon and the concrete action plan will be made to take ahead the second phase of the Yangri and Larke rivers diversion.

A comprehensive study and concrete action plan will be prepared to reconstruct the project as a long-term solution, the PM said, adding he had directed the concerned authorities to arrange to operate the existing alternative systems throughout the year.

Melamchi brings around 170 million liters of water to Kathmandu daily. The source area of the project was damaged after a flood and landslide occurred in the Melamchi River on June 15, 2021. Since then, Melamchi water has not been distributed regularly in Kathmandu. The government has continued its efforts to bring Melamchi water to Kathmandu regularly.
