KATHMANDU, Jan 27: Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai has called a meeting of the Special Committee for Friday morning to discuss the stalled peace process, particularly the issue of voluntary retirement of nearly 7,500 Maoist combatants.

According to sources, the meeting is also expected to discuss giving a certificate of honor to the combatants who have opted for voluntary retirement. [break]

In the meeting, the NC and the CPN-UML representatives are going to draw the attention of the prime minister, who is also the head of the Special Committee, toward non-implementation of earlier decision to complete the process of voluntary retirement within 19 days.

In a decision on January 1, the committee had decided to begin the voluntary retirement process within a week and to complete it within 12 days.

But the plan was thrown in limbo following objections from the Maoist party. The Special Committee has not met since its last meeting on January 1.
