KATHMANDU, May 24: A meeting of UCN (Maoist) standing committee (SC) members close to the party establishment on Thursday decided  not to yield in to the demand by Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML that Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai step down immediately.

The meeting held at Chairman Dahal’s residence in Lazimpat decided not to give in to the coalition partners´ demand that they have put forth taking serious exception to the government decision to extend the Constituent Assembly term by three months. [break]

The meeting also decided to strongly protest the idea of promulgating the new constitution keeping on hold delineation and naming of provincial states and leaving the tasks to the transitional parliament as proposed by NC and UML.

However, the meeting decided that Maoists are ready to promulgate the new constitution within May 27, provided that political parties are able to forge understanding on contentious issues of the constitution writing process, said Barshaman Pun, an SC member said.

According to him, Maoists also reaffirmed their earlier commitments with regard to the concerns raised by various groups including indigenous, Muslim, Madhesi communities and other marginalized groups.
