KATHMANDU, Nov 20: In an encouraging district-level initiative, local politicians and stakeholders have put forward a comprehensive plan to develop the country’s youngest district Nawalpur into a model district in all aspects including economic prosperity in the next five years.

Local level leaders of various political parties, federal, province and local level government representatives, Chaudhary Foundation and a number of local organizations have joined hands to unveil short-term, mid-term and long-term development plans for the economic development and prosperity of the district.

A vision document entitled “Happy, peaceful, prosperous and beautiful Nawalpur: Our Vision” unveiled by Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary Dr Shashank Koirala charts out various plans for economic, social and cultural transformation of the district.

The document envisions making integrated development efforts in the district in cooperation with all concerned parties including the private sector and national and international organizations.

The vision document plans to ensure access of roads, electricity, irrigation facility, drinking water, sanitation, information, and communications to all people in the district within five years. The document also includes other plans such as ensuring child friendly local governance, universal access of children to school, and insurance scheme to all residents of the district.

The document has laid emphasis on development of industry, agriculture, animal husbandry and cooperatives for the overall development of the district. Apart from its emphasis on technical education and income-generating skills, the vision document also plans to enhance cultural and religious tourism.

Addressing the function organized to release the vision document at Shashwat Dham in Nawalparasi, Dr Koirala, who is also an elected lawmaker for the federal parliament from the district, said the vision document could guide their development efforts for the district. He said that all political parties and organizations should join hands together to realize the plans unveiled by the document.

Koirala also reaffirmed his commitment to establish state of the art facility trauma center, international level playground and road along Narayani river bank up to Tribenidham for the development of the district.

Speaking on the occasion, former Vice Chairman of National Planning Commission (NPC) Swarnim Wagle asked all concerned to focus on the implementation of the plans developed collectively. Wagle said that management of various natural disasters, brain drain, difficulties surrounding business and good governance are some of the important challenges that may hinder economic development and prosperity.

Renowned industrialist Binod Chaudhary, whose major manufacturing facilities are located in the district, underscored the need to have strong political will for any development initiatives. While stating that employment opportunities could be generated within the country by linking social sector through private sector, Chaudhary said: “Government must be able to attract private sector for investment.”

Chaudhary Foundation had taken initiative to develop the vision document as a blueprint for the district’s development efforts.
