PGTI to co-sanction Surya Nepal Masters golf

KATHMANDU, April 3: Nepal Professional Golf Association (NPGA) and the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) came forward with a tie-up in co-sanctioning the Surya Nepal Masters, the only international and the largest golf tournament in Nepal.



As a result, Surya Nepal Masters, which is the top event of the Surya Nepal Golf Tour will boast a quality field with participation of top professionals under PGTI and is now a part of the prestigious PGTI tour.[break]



Surya Nepal Pvt Ltd issuing a press note on Sunday announced that the 18th edition of Surya Nepal Masters is scheduled to be held from April 13 to 17 at Gokarna Forest Resort.



"Surya Nepal´s Corporate Social Responsibility Initiatives - Surya Nepal Khelparyatan aimed at promoting Nepal as a golf destination and enhancing golfing talents of Nepal to the international standard," reads the press note.



Over the years, the tournament has grown bigger in terms of prize money and participation. It has the highest prize money for golf in Nepal, increased to Rs 4 million for this year from last year´s Rs 3 million.



Meanwhile, Standard Chartered Bank is the sponsor for the Pro Am event and Nepal Tourism Board is the event partner of Surya Nepal Masters 2011.


CMS Caddies´ golf Monday



The third edition of CMS All Nepal Caddies Open Golf Championship, sponsored by International Society of Medical Education (ISME), is to take place at the Royal Nepal Golf Club (RNGC) on Monday.



Altogether 64 caddies -- 40 from RNGC, 10 from Gokarna Golf Club, five from Tribhuwan Army Officers´ Golf Club, six from Pokhara and three from Dharan -- will take part in the championship. The championship will be played over 36 holes in one day; cut will be applied after 18 holes. Top 21 caddies will make it to the final 18 holes. The winner of the event will get Rs 18000, runner-up will pocket Rs 12000, and third place will receive Rs 9000. Prakash Neupane is the defending champion of the event.



ISME has been actively promoting golf for the last 5 years. “We want to encourage the caddies. We are confident that with proper support they can be successful professional golfers tomorrow,” said Nagender Pampati, the CEO and Chairman of ISME.



Golfers off to Bangladesh



Two amateur golfers -- Sanjaya Lama and Samundra Giri -- left Kathmandu on Sunday to participate in the 26th Amateur Golf Championship in Dhaka Bangladesh. Nepal No 2 Lama and No 4 Giri will represent Nepal Golf Association (NGA) in the tournament that will take place at Kurmitola Golf Club, Dhaka from April 6 to 9.



NGA Vice-president Madhukar Yakthumba is team manager. Nepal No 1 Tashi Tsering and Nepal No 3 Bikash Bogati will take part in Malaysian Amateur Open in May. The top four players selected for the international golf tournaments got their rankings from the recently concluded Western Union National Amateur Golf.



Pun wins Thalar Cup



Niraj Pun won the title of Thalar Cup in the 0 to 9 handicap category on Saturday while Pradeep Bikram Rana stood second in the category. Likewise, Niranjan Sharma won the 10 to 18 handicap category of the tournament, played under stroke-play full handicap format at the RNGC.



Mi Ran Kim won the ladies title while KJ Baral was winner in octogenarian category.
