A meeting of the four-member taskforce that is mandated to chalk out a work plan with regard to accomplishing the twin tasks of constitution writing and peace process took the decision to this effect at its meeting Monday.
"We drew the conclusion that extending the CA term for six months as per the spirit of the recent Supreme Court verdict will be an appropriate step," NC General Secretary Krishna Sitaula told Republica.
UCPN (Maoist) Secretary and Minister for Energy Posta Bahadur Bogati, Sitaula, UML General Secretary Ishwar Pokharel and Chairman of Madhesi People´s Rights Forum-Republican JP Gupta were entrusted with the responsibility of reviewing the work progress in the constitution writing and peace process.
The taskforce members will present their findings at a meeting of the top leaders from the major political parties scheduled for Tuesday morning and the meeting will subsequently endorse it.
Leaders at the taskforce meeting also reviewed whether the work with regard to advancing the peace process, constitution writing and returning the seized property, among other things, was moving ahead as per the seven-point agreement reached among the major parties earlier this month.
"We found that the work of re-categorization of former Maoist combatants is satisfactory but problems have surfaced when it comes to returning the property to the rightful owners," said Pokharel.
The taskforce however decided to entrust CA´s Constitutional Committee with the responsibility of preparing calendar of events for constitution writing.
Leaders also expressed their concern toward the failure in setting up the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Commission on Disappearance as stated in the seven-point agreement. The agreement which was signed on November 1 says the commissions would be formed within one month of the agreement.
