Pandit sets off on long distance race

KATHMANDU, May 15: Long distance runner Sanjay Pandit began his 200-km race from Jiri to Kathmandu on Saturday. Locals of Jiri, a tourist destination of Dolakha, gave a grand farewell to Pandit as he left the scenic town at six in the morning with the aim of spreading awareness about global warming and climate change.



Pandit is scheduled to arrive at the President´s Office, Maharajgunj on Sunday evening. On the first day of the race, Pandit covered a distance of 120 km and took a break at Sindhupalchowk´s Khadichaur on Saturday evening. [break]



Pandit is estimated to take 24 hours to complete the race, according to Jitendra Man Amatya, vice-principal of Kantipur Valley College where Pandit is pursuing his Bachelors in Business Administration.



This is the fourth long-distance race of Pandit which is being supported by the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology. Kantipur Valley College, Lalitpur is the organizer of the race with the theme “Save the Himalayan Region”. Kathmandu Bern Hardt College is the co-sponsor while Nagarik Hospital, Gatthaghar has provided ambulance for the race. Nepal Republic Media and Avenues Television are the official media for the race.



Pandit completed his first long distance race of 127 km from Kathmandu to Tatopani in 2008 in 11 hours 20 minutes. The following year, he ran from Swargadwari to Kathmandu and covered a distance of 339 km in 47 hours 20 minutes under the supervision of the National Sports Council.



He claims to have a record of running non-stop for 17 hours.
