Overseas donors contribute Rs 400m to relief fund

KATHMANDU, May 15: Overseas donors have contributed Rs 400 million to the Prime Minister Disaster Relief Fund (PMDRF) until Thursday.

According to Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), the Algerian Embassy in New Delhi has provided US$ 1 million cash assistance to the fund. Likewise, the Hong Kong government and other organizations in Hong Kong have supported 51,451,634 Hong Kong dollars and $1,012,820 to the fund, respectively.

Tara Prasad Pokharel, spokesperson of MoFA, told Republica that Cambodian Embassy in Thailand has contributed $100,000 to the fund, while various Tokyo-based organizations have provided cash support of 30,743,981 yen. Similarly, staff members at Nepali Embassy in Kuwait and other organizations in Kuwait have jointly donated $40,595 to the fund. "We are receiving cash support from different individuals and organizations in foreign land," said Pokharel.Various organizations in Bangladesh have jointly contributed 6,758,010 taka to the fund. While the Royal family of Thailand has provided 50 million Baht, other organizations in Thailand have donated $200,000 in the fund.

Similarly, the Embassy of Laos in Bangkok has donated $100,000 to the fund. Likewise, individuals and different organizations in South Africa have contributed $50,000 to the fund.

Different individuals and organizations in South Korea have provided Rs 687,246 in cash support to earthquake victims through PMDRF.

According to MoFA, Nepali communities living in China, Chinese organizations, Chinese people and Chinese donor agencies have jointly contributed $399,825 to the fund. Similarly, different organizations in Malaysia and Qatar have given 100,000 ringgit and 43,840 Rial.

The 7.6-magnitude earthquake that jolted Nepal on April 25 has killed more than 8,200 people and left more than 17,000 injured. The tremor damaged hundreds of thousands of houses across the country. According to government data, more than 600,000 people have been displaced due to the earthquake.

According to the primary estimation of Ministry of Finance (MoF), the deadly earthquake has inflicted loss worth Rs 500 billion on national economy. Likewise, the tourism industry suffered loss worth Rs 5 billion as per the preliminary assessment made by the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation (MoTCA).

MoCTCA has already announced immediate and long-term plan for early recovery of tourism industry.
