Over two dozen hurt in far-west clashes

DHANGADI, May 15: Over two dozen persons were injured on Tuesday in clashes between those protesting for undivided far-west and those demanding Tharuhat province at different places following Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal´s call to the indigenous groups to retaliate.



A dozen persons were injured in the clash at Campus Road in Dhangadi after Maoist youth cadres obstructed the supporters of undivided far-west from participating in a mass assembly at Park Mode. The youths of two groups armed with sticks and catapults clashed in the afternoon and in the evening.[break]



The youths demanding undivided far-west pelted stones at the UCPN-Maoist office causing minor damages. Those injured in the clashes are being treated at the Seti Zonal Hospital. Meanwhile, the youths in favor of undivided far-west also attacked Maoist deputy in-charge of Kailali Govinda Timilsina. Police had to intervene to take the situation under control. On the other hand, Tharuhat supporters vandalized a Red Cross ambulance (Ba 6 Cha 2114) at Campus Road.







Meanwhile, supporters of undivided far-west and Tharuhat clashed at Bauniya of Kailali along the East West Highway from four in the afternoon till seven in the evening. Police opened 12 rounds in the air and fired two tear gas shells to take the situation under control. Six policemen including assistant sub-inspector Dan Bahadur Rokaya and five others were injured in the clashes.



Similarly, locals of Bauniya torched over 50 bicycles of Tharuhat cadres after the latter pelted stones at over half a dozen shops for defying their banda. "There has been no serious damage. But the situation still remains very volatile," Chief District Officer (CDO) of Kailali Kailash Kumar Bajimaya. Meanwhile, two more persons were injured in a clash at Pahalwanpur Monday night.
