KATHMANDU, Sept 7: Over 18,000 candidates are contesting the third phase of local level elections to be held in Province 2.
Different political parities filed their nominations on Wednesday to take part in the local polls in the eight districts, Election Commission (EC) told Republica Online.
A total of 6,627 representatives will be elected from the third phase of local elections scheduled to be held on September 18.

According to the information provided on Wednesday evening, 18, 200 candidates registered their nomination. Since all the details have not arrived yet, it is likely that the number of candidates is likely to go up, said EC Spokesperson Nawa Raj Dhakal.
EC said the nomination was filed in 136 local units including rural municipalities, municipalities, and sub-metropolitan cities in a very enthusiastic manner.
“Despite being hit by natural disasters, people from all castes and creeds including women, Dalit, indigenous nationalities took part in filing nominations in an enthusiastic manner,” said spokesperson Dhakal.
The nomination took place from 10 am in the morning and ended at 4 pm yesterday.
There are four sub metropolitan cities (Birgunj Sub Metropolitan City, Jitpur-Simara, Kalaiya, and Janakpur) , 73 municipalities and 59 rural municipalities.
With 2, 664,000 voters, EC has fixed 2,166 polling stations, 3,578 polling centers in Province 2.
