Micheal Li

Brand Manager, OPPO

Micheal Li, the brand manager of OPPO, is in Nepal for the launch of the Chinese smartphone brand in the Nepali market. Sujan Dhungana of Republica talked to Li to know about OPPO's plans in Nepal. Excerpts:

Please say something about the OPPO brand.

The brand, OPPO, was established in 2001. We entered the smartphone business in 2008. In this short time, we have established OPPO as one of major players in the global smartphone market. OPPO has been named the No.4 smartphone brand in the global market in the second quarter of 2016 with 6.6 percent market share, as per the IDC report. We are stepping into Nepal to give a new taste to consumers here.

How is the Nepali market?

I think that Nepal is a very potential market for OPPO as the demand of smartphone here is growing fast. People here are switching from bar phones to smartphones which makes the market more potential for us. Moreover, I have heard that number of mobile subscriptions have outnumbered the country's population.  This also encouraged OPPO to enter into the Nepali market.

What will be your strategy in this already crowded market?

We have actually brought very competitive devices in Nepal. Our products launched here have focused on camera technology, addressing the growing craze of taking selfie photos. The high emphasis that OPPO has given to front camera has made OPPO one of the leaders and innovators in global smartphone industry. Our cameras are our strong point.

We believe that our focus on camera technology will help to place us among top smartphone brands in Nepal.

We have plans to open 500 outlets and eight exclusive stores in Nepal within first year of the launch. One service center of OPPO has already been set up at Civil Mall. Similarly, we also aim to emphasize high on the marketing side.
