Oppn alliance agitators clash with police in different parts of country

KATHMANDU, March 30: Scores of people were injured when sporadic clashes erupted between the agitating activists of 30-party opposition alliance and police personnel in different parts of the country on Sunday.

The scuffles broke out during the protest rallies staged by the stick-wielding activists of opposition alliance demanding promulgation of the new constitution through consensus among the major parties.


At least seven people, including two policemen, were injured in Chitwan district after police tried to intervene. The injured--some activists and one policemen--are currently undergoing treatment at Bharatpur Hospital, according to Sahkul Bahadur Thapa, Superintendent of Police (SP) at District Police Office (DPO), Chitwan.

He said that the tension between security personnel and activists of the agitating opposition alliance took a nasty turn when the agitators pelted stones at the policemen after they tried to intervene.

A dozen of agitating activists were taken into police custody, according to the DPO.

Meanwhile, agitators alleged the DPO of using force to disrupt their peaceful rallies.

Likewise, at least six protestors and two policemen were injured in a clash that occurred in Gaur, district headquarters of Rautahat. Among the injured, Police Constable Rambabu Yadav sustained head injuries while activist Roshan Sharma was hurt in the eyes.

Hundreds of activists associated with the 30-party opposition alliance had taken to the streets to protest against government failure to promulgate the constitution in time. The clash broke out after the police tried to seize bamboo sticks from the agitators, according to Chief District Officer (CDO), Madan Bhujel.

In Bhairahwa, nine activists were injured in a clash with the police, according to the alliance.

In a press release issued by the alliance, the agitating party activists blamed police authority of unnecessary intervention in their peaceful protest, and they also called for a strike on Monday to protest the police's use of force against them.

In a similar protest in Kavre district, 12 activists were injured in clashes, according to Dinanath Gautam, district chairperson of UCPN-Maoists. Likewise, five police personnel, including police inspector Dipak Bharati, were also injured in the incident, said DSP Raj Kumar KC, who is also the spokesperson at the DPO, Kavre.

In Sindhuli, DSP Shyam Kumar Mahato, who is also the DPO's chief, was injured in a clash with agitating party activists. As hundreds of bamboo sticks were confiscated in the beginning of the protests, there was no untoward incidents in the protest, Police Inspector Rajendra Thapa informed.

The protests staged by the agitating 30-party opposition alliance could not make any impact in Khotang, Banke, and Dang districts.
