KATHMANDU, Nov 20: The voter turnout stood at only 23 percent in Thawang of Rolpa district in the elections to the members of House of Representatives and provincial assembly held on Sunday. This is probably the least voter turnout across the country.

Thawang had two polling stations. According to the District Election Office (DEO), only 230 votes were cast out of 1,314 voters at the Janachachchhu Primary School polling station located in Thawang Rural Municipality-1. Similarly, the number of votes cast in Ward number 2 of Thawang was just 419 out of the total 1,577 voters.

Citing the possible disruption by the Biplav led Maoist party in a number of polling stations of the district, the local government authority had tightened security in all sensitive locations.

The security forces also carried out aerial patrolling by using choppers. Ordinary people could have felt threatened due to this reason, which might have resulted in the lowest voter turnout, according to DEO officials.
