ROLPA, Oct 11: While Dr Govinda KC is busy with his thirteenth fast-unto-death in the capital, Dr Anil KC of Rolpa is busy treating patients. Dr Anil KC, who fully supports the demands put forward by the senior doctor, celebrated Dashain with his patients this year.

He is the only doctor in Rolpa who can perform complex cases of delivery."I might have to carry out a surgery at any time and I am the only one here right now. That's why I could not go home for Dashain," he said. He stressed the need for increasing the number of doctors in the hospital.

Parliament's Speaker Onsari Gharti had made a visit to the District Hospital, Rolpa before Dashain. "We requested her to make our voice heard in the parliament. Let's see what happens," said Dr Anil.

Dr Anil KC and Dr Tejendra Saud are the only chief doctors at the district hospital. "More than 100 patient's visit the hospital for check-up and treatment each day. So, it's challenging for two of us to take care of all of them," he laments.

These two doctors have been conducting surgeries, working in emergency, as well as at OPD all at once. "The condition of patients is miserable but there is no ICU and blood bank in the hospital," he added.

Despite staging hunger strikes for several times and risking his life for the sake of patients and medical students, the demands of Dr Govinda KC are yet to be addressed. This is the reason why Dr Anil is doubtful whether the government will hear their demands. From early morning till dusk, this doctor is found at various sections of the hospital. He has been saving hundreds of people by risking his own life in the dilapidated building of the hospital. The hospital lacks even basic infrastructure.

Recently, the government announced new laws in the medical sector after the increasing rate of death of patients across the country. This has been a great threat to the doctors.
"We try our best to cure our patients but the poor infrastructures and equipment may lead to some accidents," he said, adding," Sometimes we need to take risks with the hope of saving lives of patients. But now, we can't dare to take such step because of the new laws." There are not enough beds in the hospital because of which patients are compelled to stay on the floor.

UCPN (Maoist Center) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, who spent his difficult days in Rolpa during the insurgency period, was elected a member of the Constituent Assembly from here and has become the country's prime minister twice. But the locals lament that he has not given proper attention to their problems.
