KATHMANDU, Sept 26: With the prospect of over two dozen youth leaders making it to the Central Working Committee (CWC) in the 12th Nepali Congress general convention, the party is likely to see a sea change in the days to come.

While over a dozen youth leaders have been elected as CWC members from reserved seats, some eight youth leaders are likely to secure CWC berths from the zonal category. If they continue to maintain the lead in the open category, another five will secure their berth in the 85-member central working committee. [break]

Nevertheless, most of the youth leaders likely to secure their berths in the party´s central decision making body are familiar faces either serving as lawmakers of the party or have held ministerial portfolios.

While youth leaders Min Bishwakarma, Jiwan Bishwakarma, Pushpa Bhusal, Kamala Panta, Umakanta Chaudhary, Ajaya Chaurasiya, Mahendra Yadav, Parbati DC Chaudhary, Minakshi Jha, Bhisma Raj Angdembe, Dhan Raj Gurung, Mohammad Aftab Alam and Sita Gurung have been elected as CWC members from reserved seats, Jiwan Bahadur Shahi, Kishor Singh Rathour, Badri Pandey, Ram Kumar Chaudhary, Nabindra Raj Joshi, Surendra Raj Pandey, Arjun Prasad Joshi and Dipak Giri are likely to make it to the positions from the zonal category.

Likewise, Gagan Thapa, Bal Krishna Khand, NP Saud, Chandra Bhandari and Shankar Bhandari are almost certain to get elected as CWC members in the open category.

Some 30 percent of the total 312,022 active membership distributed before the party´s 12th general convention belonged to 18 to 35-year age group. It was believed that such a distribution of membership coupled with the provision of reserved CWC seats allocated for various marginalized groups would bring in more youths and new faces in the party´s CWC.

Altogether 2,200 votes under open category and some 2,080 votes under zonal categories were counted till Sunday evening. There are a total 25 CWC seats under the open category and 14 seats under zonal category. According to Radhe Shyam Adhikari, chief of NC Central Election Committee, the vote counting will resume Monday morning.

Of the 2,080 of the total 3,088 votes counted under the zonal category, Jiwan Bahadur Shahi from Karnali, Kishor Singh Rathour from Bheri, Badri Pandey from Seti, Dilendra Badu from Mahakali, Dipak Giri from Rapti, Arjun Prasad Joshi from Dhaulagiri and Surendra Raj Pandey from Gandaki have been taking the lead. Likewise, Ramesh Rijal from Narayani, Nabindra Raj Joshi from Bagmati, Aananda Raj Dhungana from Janakpur, Ram Kumar Chaudhary from Sagarmatha, Amod Prasad Upadhyay from Koshi and Narendra Bikram Nembang have been leading their rivals.
