KATHMANDU, MAY 19: Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Nepal has lauded the initiatives taken by the Supreme Court for judicial reforms.

OHCHR Nepal Chief Richard Bennett conveyed his office´s appreciation of the efforts for judicial reforms during a meeting with newly appointed Chief Justice Min Bahadur Rayamajhee on Tuesday, said a statement from the UN human rights body.

The OHCHR´s statement has come amidst launch of judicial reform programs by Rayamajhee who assumed the top judicial post two weeks ago. The judiciary has already decided to establish Verdict Implementation Directorate and set up a hotline to hear complaints against judges and judicial staffers, in a bid to usher in judicial reform in the country. The judiciary also has plan to install CCTV to ensure transparency in the courts based in Kathmandu Valley.

“The representative (Bennett) welcomed the initiatives taken by the chief justice, recognizing the critical role of the Supreme Court in protecting human rights and the rule of law,” OHCHR said in the statement.

The judicial reforms include the establishment of a Court Decisions Enforcement Directorate, the setting up of telephone hotline service for use by persons who wish to register a complaint about irregularities within the judicial system and the installation of CCTV in the Supreme Court so as to enhance transparency.

During the meeting, Bennett also reiterated OHCHR´s willingness to support the judiciary for the latter´s effort for reforms, said the statement.
