KATHMANDU, Jan 8: The Nepal Students Union (NSU) has demanded the government instantly enforce the constitutional provision for health insurance facility for all regular students.

An NSU delegation led by its president Nain Singh Mahar today called on Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba with a request to ensure free health insurance for regular students guaranteed by the Article 35 of Part-III of the Constitution of Nepal.

Likewise, the delegation demanded allowance to unemployed youths as per the Article 33 of the constitution and guarantee of technical higher education with the establishment of at least one medical college, one engineering college and agriculture college in every province.

Establishment of an e-library in all campuses, academic bank loan for students, the establishment of two child development centers in every ward and arrangement of better treatment for Meera Katuwal, the NSU central member who was injured in an IED explosion during the recent election and appropriate compensation for her are among other demands of the NSU.

In response, the Prime Minister said demands related to health and education put forth by the delegation were genuine, pledging to discuss it with bodies concerned, as stated by NSU joint general secretary Prem Bahadur Jaisi.

The NSU has said it would go with various pressure-creating programmes ranging from signature collection to sit-in if its demands fell on deaf ears.
