KATHMANDU, June 17: Nine journalist women were feted in recognition for their relentless contribution to country and people through write-ups here today. 



Bharati Silwal Giri, Babita Basnet, Bharati Upadhaya, Radha Chalise, Rita Gurung, Sharada Kumari Poudel, Dhan Lama, Amrita Lamsal and Shanta Poudel were honored. They have been writing for various publications for the last two decades. 



They were feted by Nepali Congress leaders on the occasion of the Silver Jubilee of Nepal Press Union. 



Addressing the program, Nepali Congress senior leader Ram Chandra Poudel and leaders Krishna Prasad Sitaula, Arjun Narsingh KC, Purna Bahadur Khadka and former minister Dr. Minendra Rijal underlined the need for upholding professional ethics and skills in journalism. They also stressed on the need for a research and study-based journalism. 



On the occasion, journalists working in different media spoke on various aspects of journalism, enhancing the capacity of the journalists, press freedom and fundamental rights, among other issues in the sector. 



NPU is the umbrella organization of journalists subscribing to the democratic thought and has nearly 10 thousand members. It is the first journalists' organization of the country to acquire the membership of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ).The union has district branches in 73 out of 75 districts.



Women comprise only five percent of the members of the union. RSS
