BIRATNAGAR, Dec 1: Nepali Congress leader Dr Shekhar Koirala has said that a new government will be formed under the leadership of the Nepali Congress (NC).
Addressing a press conference organized in Biratnagar on Thursday, Dr Koirala said that the existing alliance will continue even after the elections. “Since NC is the largest party, the government will be formed under the leadership of the NC itself,” he said.
Dr Koirala said that along with the main parties in the ruling coalition including CPN (Maoist Center) and CPN (Unified Socialist) Party, other fringe parties may also be included in the new power equation. "Apart from the coalition partners including Nepali Congress, CPN (Maoist Center) and CPN (Unified Socialist), some smaller parties may also join the government," he said. "Now, the one who can get the majority seat in the NC’s parliamentary party election will be the prime minister," he said.
When asked if he was also in the race to become prime minister, Koirala said that he would answer only after discussing this issue with President Sher Bahadur Deuba and other leaders after reaching Kathmandu.
Regarding the discussion of making NC General Secretary Gagan Thapa the new Prime Minister, Koirala made it clear that one cannot become the Prime Minister just by making a wish. "You don't become the prime minister just by wanting to become the prime minister and by making noise in public," he said.
Dr Koirala said that the immediate priorities of the country should be to reduce corruption and ensure good governance. He also claimed to restore Biratnagar as the political capital of Nepal.
