“If the CA term is extended forcibly, the Madhesi Front will take to the streets,” said president of the Madhesi People´s Rights Forum, Democratic (MPRF-D) President Bijaya Kumar Gachchhadar, asking the people of the Tarai to be ready for a mass movement.[break]
The Madhesi Front, which includes MPRF, Tarai Madhes Democratic Party (TMDP), and Sadbhavana Party (SP), has contended that there is no point in extending the CA term without reaching an agreement on peace and constitution.
“The current coalition cannot take the peace process and constitution drafting to a logical end. So the prime minister should resign to make way for national consensus,” said Gachchhadar.
He argued that the “secret seven-point agreement” signed between Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal and Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal is a document of “conspiracy”. “Khanal is dancing to the tune of the Maoists who have directed their guns at him,” said Gachchhadar.
Similarly, President of the Sadbhavana Party Rajendra Mahato arguing that the major three political parties -- the NC, UML and UCPN (Maoist) -- have deceived the Madhesi people time and again said that the government decision to extend the CA term is part of the game to marginalize the Madhesis.
He argued that the CA term should not be extended until the Maoists abandon their “attachment to the politics of weapons” and the drafting of the new constitution is ensured.
TMDP Chairman Mahanta Thakur also argued that the CA term should not be extended under the current circumstances. The Madhesi Front leaders are currently holding mass meetings across the southern plains for “peace and constitution.”
