NJA President Deepak Harsha Bajracharya made the announcement at the National Sports Council on Wednesday during a function organized ahead of the fourth edition of Ambika Memorial National Open Judo Championship, which will be held next Friday.[break]
“The family members of late Ambika Bahadur Chhetri have pledged to provide Rs 1 million,” said Bajracharya. “We are really grateful because all we need is funds to conduct tournaments,” he added.
Pramod Bahadur Chhetri, son of late Chhetri, handed over a check of Rs 150,000 to NJA Treasurer Bipin Shrestha for next week´s tournament and pledged to provide an additional one million rupees for the tournament in the future.
“We want to continue this tournament for a long time. We will set up the fund after the tournament,” said Chhetri.
The upcoming edition will feature competitions in two events -- men´s open (above 60 kg) and women´s open (above 48 kg) -- and will see participation of the top judo players of the country.
Altogether 32 male players and 16 female players have been selected for the tournament based on the last edition´s results and their achievements in a recently held judo championship.
“This is one of the biggest tournaments similar to the Japan Open Judo Championship and we have selected only the medalists of the previous tournaments,” added Bajracharya.
The top three players of the male category will receive Rs 7,000, Rs 5,000 and Rs 3,000 respectively while the gold, silver and bronze medalists of the female category will bag Rs 5,000, Rs 3,000 and Rs 2,000 respectively.
Meanwhile, NJA will conduct a seminar on coaching, organizing and kata a day after the tournament to shed light on the changes in international rules of judo.
