Nirmala Sharma is new FNJ president

Sharma secured 3,973 votes, while Bista received 2,829 votes. She ran as the candidate from a joint panel of the Nepal Press Union and Press Chautari Nepal.

KATHMANDU, Dec 15: Nirmala Sharma has won the presidency of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ), becoming the first woman to hold the position in the organization’s 69-year history. Although some votes from Madhesh Province are still being verified, Sharma defeated her closest rival, Ramesh Bista, by 1,144 votes.


Sharma secured 3,973 votes, while Bista received 2,829 votes. She ran as the candidate from a joint panel of the Nepal Press Union and Press Chautari Nepal.

Sharma’s panel is also leading in the election for other office-bearer positions. Deepak Acharya is in the lead for senior vice president, Nitu Pandit for general secretary, and Ram Prasad Dahal, among others, is also ahead.


A victory rally is being planned at the FNJ’s central office, Sanchargram, to celebrate Sharma’s historic win.
