NEPALGUNJ, Sept 22: At least nine inmates have escaped from a child reform center in Banke, according to police.

DSP Narayan Dangi said that police personnel have been deployed to search for the children who escaped the reform center after a clash erupted there claiming the life of a teenager.

"Ten children were injured in the clash, and one succumbed to the injuries while undergoing treatment," said DSP Dangi. The deceased has been identified as Sulav KC from Kanchan Rural Municipality-4 in Rupandehi.

DSP Dangi said that the deceased was kept at the reform center after being convicted of abduction and rape.

He added that two groups of children at the correction center were initially engaged in verbal altercation, which later turned into confrontation.

Khagendra Sarung Magar from the reform center claimed that another group of prisoners attacked them while they were asleep. "They ruthlessly assaulted us, targeting our heads and hands," he told media persons.

According to the police, the children vandalized two motorcycles, window panes, railings and a computer at the child reform center, and also set police uniforms on fire.

A joint team of Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force is patrolling the reform center as tension persists. Out of the total 254 prisoners in the facility, 165 are above 18 years of age.
