Issuing a press statement Sunday, the NHRC has expressed its deep concern saying that such incidents are condemnable when Nepal has already ratified the Caste-based Discrimination and Untouchability Crime Elimination and Punishment Act that prohibits the practices of ‘untouchability’ both in the public and private sphere.
NHRC officials had inquired the Rautahat chief district officer, local security authorities and local social activists in connection with the attack. [Break]
“We have deployed a team from our central office and regional branches to probe the incident,” reads the statement. The NHRC has urged the government to probe the incident impartially.
It has also asked to the government to provide compensation to the victims’ family, free-treatment to the injured and to rehabilitate the displaced Dalits.
“We urge to the government to punish the culprits, give justice to the victims. Furthermore, we urge to all stakeholders to enforce effective security arrangements aiming to maintain social harmony in the community,” reads the statement.
