New Diamond, APF make winning start

POKHARA, Sept 11: Shivam New Diamond Academy has started the National Women’s Volleyball Tournament on Monday with a win over Pokhara’s Tops School 3-0, in a tournament organized on the occasion of women’s festival Teej. 

At the Indrarajya Laxmi School’s Sports Ground in Lamachaur, New Diamond defeated Tops on straight sets of 25-22, 25-17, 25-19. New Diamond is the runner-up of the last edition of the tournament. 

Likewise, in the other match played on the same day, departmental team and defending champions Armed Police Force (APF) Club beat Chitwan Tigers 3-0 on straight sets of 25-21, 25-18, 25-14. 

The other league matches slated to be played on the day were postponed after rain disturbed the games. The coordinator of the tournament Sushil Kumar Shrestha informed that the match between New Diamond and the other departmental team Tribhuvan Army Club was postponed due to rain. 

Inaugurating the tournament, Minister for Social Development of Gandaki Province, Nar Devi Pun expressed hope that the tournament will nurture the talents of women.

A total of five teams are taking part in the tournament. The winner of the tournament will take home Rs 100,000, while the runner-up will be rewarded with Rs 65,000, informed Shrestha. 

Departmental team Nepal Police Club and Jawalakhel Volleyball Training Center could not take part in the tournament due to technical reasons.
