Nepal's first safe water zones declared

KATHMANDU, June 5: On the occasion of World Environment Day 2009, three communities in Lalitpur were declared Nepal´s first safe water zones amid a function in Lalitpur Friday.



Choche, Lohan and Chusika communities were declared as safe water zones in order to improve the water quality there according to a press release by Guthi, a non-governmental organization here. These communities which are traditionally prone to water-borne diseases have been declared as safe water zones to tackle the hazards brought about by water-borne diseases. Programs to increase awareness on water-borne diseases have also been introduced.



The current program was initiated by the government, UN Habitat and the Coca Cola Company Nepal among others.
