KATHMANDU, Nov 17: A Nepali national in the custody of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) died at the Karnes County Immigration Processing Center (KCIPC) in Karnes City, Texas on November 13.

The deceased has been identified as 34-year-old Subash Shrestha. An autopsy is pending to determine the official cause of death.

Shrestha entered the United States without inspection, admission, or parole near Lukeville, Arizona, on September 2. The US Border Patrol (USBP) issued him a Notice and Order of Expedited Removal, citing inadmissibility under Section 212(a)(7)(A)(i)(I) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) for being an intended immigrant without an immigrant visa.

Shrestha was transferred to the Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) in San Antonio by the USBP on September 9. He was detained at KCIPC where he continued his immigration proceedings.

The ERO, on November 13, was notified that Shrestha was not responding.

“Following medical assistance, Shrestha was pronounced dead,” reads a statement by the ICE.

ICE states it has notified the Embassy of Nepal in Washington, DC, of Shrestha’s passing. ERO San Antonio staff notified the next of kin.
