KATHMANDU, Nov 14: Citing increase in transportation costs and rise in prices of raw materials, two leading carpet flooring manufacturers -- ST Carpets and Yeti Carpets -- have increased price of their products in range of Rs 25 to Rs 45 per meter from October-end.

ST Carpets has increased the price of its products by Rs 25 per meter, making it Rs 410 per meter. Similarly, Yeti Carpets has raised the price to Rs 470 per meters, up by Rs 45 per meter. [break]

Both the companies have attributed upward revision in prices rise in price of polyamides (nylons) and polypropylene - two key raw materials - in the international market. As these raw materials are not available, companies must import it from international suppliers.

“We were forced to increase price of our products by Rs 15 per meter initially and again by Rs 10 per liter after the price of fiber, filaments, polyester and other raw materials increased in the international market,” said Riddhi Ghimire, sales assistant at ST Carpets.

Rama Maharjan, sales representative of Yeti Carpets, echoed Ghimire and said the company raised prices after raw materials became costlier in international market.

There is a high demand for Nepali carpet flooring in the market as they are cheaper as compared to the imported ones.

According to an attendant at Anand Oriental Decorator, Nepali carpet flooring is used by both high class as well as middle class customers and is mostly used at homes and offices. “Housing companies and hotels import them from foreign countries,” the attendant added.

Price of imported carpet flooring, however, has remained unchanged. While Indian carpet flooring is available at Rs 150 per sq ft, those imported from Dubai is priced between Rs 35 to Rs 120 sq ft.

Carpet flooring imported from Malaysia and Indonesia are priced at Rs 35 per sq ft and Rs 135 sq ft respectively, while European carpet flooring are priced between Rs 70 to Rs 200 per sq ft.
