KATHMANDU, Sept 4: Carpet producers have urged the government to do the needful for increasing export of Nepali hand-knotted carpet.
Presenting a memorandum to new appointed Minister for Industry Nabindra Raj Joshi on Sunday, Central Carpet Industries Association (CCIA) said that carpet export is falling because of the government's failure to promote this high-value product.
The delegation also urged the government to celebrate 2017 as 'Carpet Export Year' in order to promote country's carpet industry.
“Though carpet industry has been making high contribution to Nepali economy, the government has not kept it in its priority,” Tshering Sherpa, president of CCIA said, adding: “The government should take necessary policy intervention to Nepali carpets in the international market. Celebration of 2017 as Carpet Export Year can help a lot to increase export of Nepali carpets.”
CCIA have also urged the government to increase farmers to start commercial sheep farming so that the country becomes independent in wool required for the carpet industry.
