NEPALGUNJ, Jan 16: Nepalgunj recorded its coldest day this week as the mercury dipped to 3 degrees Celsius. The sky remains overcast for the past three weeks which caused the mercury to climb down unusually. Local elderly say these are the coldest days in their living memory.

Except for three days during the period, the sun was never seen and felt here and only dense fog and cold wave prevailed. Extreme cold has thrown life out of gear as people remain inside their homes most of the time. [break]

According to Meteorological Forecast Division, 3 degrees Celsius temperature is new record for Nepalgunj.

The town would not see temperatures below six degrees Celsius in winter. During summer, it swelters up to 44 degrees. The elderly in the town say temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius is unusual for the town.

Unlike hill districts in the farwestern region where the sun shines almost everyday during winter, the plains including Nepalgunj see dense fog and cold wave. Earlier, four years ago, Nepalgung was shrouded in fog for over a week.

Besides people having a difficult time, the adverse weather has also obstructed flights.
