Nepalgunj, Kathmandu win

KATHMANDU, Feb 16: Region No 5 (Nepalgunj) made it two wins out of two in the Senior Women’s National Cricket Tournament on Sunday, while Region No 3 (Kathmandu) registered its first win in the tournament. Nepalgunj defeated Region No 1 (Biratnagar) by two wickets in a Group B match at the Pulchowk Engineering College Ground to go level on four points with group leader Region No 7 (Nepalgunj).KATHMANDU, Feb 16: Region No 5 (Nepalgunj) made it two wins out of two in the Senior Women’s National Cricket Tournament on Sunday, while Region No 3 (Kathmandu) registered its first win in the tournament.

Nepalgunj defeated Region No 1 (Biratnagar) by two wickets in a Group B match at the Pulchowk Engineering College Ground to go level on four points with group leader Region No 7 (Nepalgunj).

At the TU Cricket Ground in Kirtipur, Kathmandu registered a six-wicket victory over Region No 9 (Dhangadhi) to climb to third in Group B with two points from two matches.

Biratnagar and Dhangadhi, fourth and fifth in the group, are yet to earn any point.

After winning the toss and inviting Biratnagar to bat first, Nepalgunj achieved the 186-run target in 39.2 overs losing eight wickets.

Nepalgunj’s opening pair of Gita Goshai and Sanju Chaudhary gave the team a flying start to its run chase with a 69-run stand. Gita made 23 runs off 46 balls before being caught by Sabnam Rai. Sanju, the topscorer for Nepalgunj, hit a quickfire 43 off 34 before she was run out by Sabnam. Gita hit four fours and Sanju’s knock included eight fours.

Mamta Thapa (30) and Samana Pun (14) remained not out. Mamta scored three fours while Samana hit two.

Sangita Rai and Neha Karki bagged two wickets each for Biratnagar.

Earlier, Biratnagar opener Kajol Shrestha scored 64 runs off 106 balls with 11 fours and was involved in four partnerships, but could not guide her team to a big total as she found little support at the other end.

Sanjana Budhathoki contributed 29 runs off 33 balls, while Roma Thapa hit 21 off 16.

Trishna Singh took four wickets for Nepalgunj and Samjhana Sharma picked up two.

In another match, Dhangadhi was all out for 136 in 39.3 overs against Kathmandu after winning the toss and opting to bat first.

Kabita Joshi topscored with an unbeaten 29 runs for Dhangadhi. Bimala Bhatt and Nirmala Chand contributed 24 runs and 20 runs, respectively.

Suman Khatiwada was the pick of the bowlers for Kathmandu with three wickets. Kanchan Shrestha claimed two wickets, while Ashmin Karmacharya and Sangeeta Gauchan picked up one each.

In reply, Kathmandu met the target in 30.2 overs losing four wickets. Sangeeta Gauchan topscored for Kathmandu with 43 runs off 76 balls, including four fours.

Kanchan Shrestha hit 33 runs off 60 balls with two fours.
