Nepalgunj, Army win openers

KATHMANDU, March 10: Region No 5 (Nepalgunj) and Tribhuvan Army Club began their campaign of the Men’s Senior One-day National Cricket Tournament with wins on Monday.

Nepalgunj recorded an eight-wicket win over Region No 2 (Birgunj) at the Pulchowk Engineering College ground in Lalitpur, while Army beat Region No 1 (Biratnagar) by two wickets at the Tribhuvan University cricket ground in Kirtipur in Group A matches.


Half centuries from Prajwal Shahi and Shubendu Pandey helped Nepalgunj chase its 199-run target in 34 overs with eight wickets in hand.




Man-of-the-match Prajwal remained not out on 96 runs off 87 balls that included a six and 11 boundaries.



Earlier, winning the toss and opting to bat first, Birgunj was bundled out for 198 runs in 41.1 overs.

Suraj top-scored for Birgunj with 44 runs off 66 balls that included four boundaries. He was also involved in a 42-run stand with Aanshu Kandoi (23 off 24) for the fifth wicket. Ram Naresh Giri added 38 runs facing 45 balls with six boundaries to help Birgunj post a fighting total.



Nepalgunj’s Aakash bagged four wickets, while Amar Singh and Avinash Bohara picked up two wickets each.



In another match, Mahesh Chhetri and Anil Mandal completed half centuries as Army Club chased its 192 runs target given by Biratnagar in 43 overs losing eight wickets.



Mahesh contributed 61 runs playing 89 balls that included five fours, while Anil added 54 runs off 75 balls cracking a six and five boundaries. Rajesh Pulami scored valuable 31 runs off 48 balls that included a six.  



Siddhant Lohani picked up four wickets giving away 27 runs in eight overs, while Lalit Rajbanshi pocketed two wickets for Biratnagar.



Earlier, deciding to bat first, Biratnagar was bundled out for 191 runs in 47.4 overs against disciplined bowlers of Army.
Jugal Chaudhary top scored 43 runs off 62 balls for Biratnagar hitting seven boundaries, while skipper Manjeet Shrestha hit 37 runs facing 48 balls, which included two sixes and three fours.



Man-of-the-match Jitendra Mukhiya claimed four wickets for Army Club, while Avinash Karn and Rahul BK pocketed two wickets each.



On Tuesday, Birgunj will play against Region No 8 (Pokhara) at TU Ground, while Region No 7 (Janakpur) will meet Nepalgunj at Pulchowk.
