Nepal will enter new era after CA polls: Regmi

KATHMANDU, Oct 29: Chairman of Council of Ministers Khil Raj Regmi said Nepal will enter into a new era by successfully holding the Constituent Assembly (CA) elections after three weeks. The election is the best way to revitalize the stalled political process, he said.



Addressing a program organized to mark the 68th anniversary of the United Nations Day at Lalitpur-based UN Office on Tuesday, he said, "With lessons learned from the working of the erstwhile CA, this election is definitely going to be crucial in completing the peace process in its entirety, including the writing of a new constitution, thereby establishing sustainable ground for political stability, inclusive growth and development, and realizing the democratic rights of all the people regardless of the castes, creeds, ethnic origin and geographic regions."[break]



The Chairman of the Council of Ministers wished that the UN Day inspire us to work for peace. "Putting an end to the protracted transition and laying the foundation for lasting peace and political stability is Nepal´s paramount interest of the hour to pave the way for inclusive and sustainable development, realizing the democratic rights of the people and forging a social order based on equality, equity and justice," he said.



Nepal is preparing to implement the Istanbul Program of Action for the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) by integrating all the relevant priority areas set forth in the program document prepared and adopted under the auspices of the United Nations with a view to graduating from LDC status by the year 2022, he said, adding that to achieve this ambitious goal, there is a need to accelerate the attainment of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in full within the stipulated timeframe and ensure the inclusion of its priorities in the post -2015 development agenda as a country in special needs.



Chairman Regmi said that it was also of utmost importance to enhance productivity capacity of Nepal to sustain a more robust growth and strike a balance in achieving economic and social development as well as ensuring protection of the environment- the three dimensions of the sustainable development. We want to work closely with the UN and all other development partners towards this end, he added.



Regmi said Nepali people have an unflinching faith in the Charter of the United Nations and uphold the conviction that the principles and purposes enshrined in it provide a constant source of inspiration for cooperation and collaboration among states and entities to achieve peace, progress and prosperity for the entire people of the world.



"The UN is very much in the hearts of Nepali people as it is working with unquestioned mandate for seeking multilateral solutions to global problems and forging consensus on the continued advancement of humankind," the Chairman of Council of Ministers said.



As poverty is global problem and a serious impediment to sustainable development, it needs to be fought with firm resolve, marshalling resources from all available quarters, he stressed.



Economic and financial crisis, ominous effects of climate change and increasing incidences and disasters ring alarm bells to the international community to work with the collective efforts to tackle these formidable challenges in a bid to sustaining development gains and continue momentum forwards.

He further said the remaining stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction and continued threat of proliferation of deadly weapons have caused tensions in the world, posing threats to the existence of human civilization, stressing on collective efforts in the direction of disbarments of weapons of mass destruction and non-proliferation.



Praising the UN for its role in the maintenance of peace and security through peacekeeping operations in the troubled parts of the world, he pledged continuous participation of Nepal in the UN peacekeeping mission and expressed gratitude for the UN assistance to Nepal´s socio-economic development.



Resident coordinator of the UN System in Nepal, Mr. Jamie McGoldrick pledged continuous support to Nepal´s development endevours and urged all the bodies concerned to abide by the election code of conduct. He said he was hopeful that political parties in Nepal would be successful in attaining peace and stability.



On the occasion, UN employees completing 25 to 35 years in service were honored and a short drama ´My Dream, My Constitution´ was staged.
