Nepal Police Club lift national judo title

KATHMANDU, Dec 25: Nepal Police Club (NPC) were declared the team champions of the Fourth National Judo Championship that concluded in Rajbiraj on Saturday.



NPC won 5 golds, 1 silver and 2 bronzes to claim the first position while Multipurpose Martial Arts Centre (MMAC) finished second with 3 golds, 2 silver and 1 bronze. [break]



Mongolian Judo Club secured the third position winning 1 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze.



MMAC´s Phupu Lhamu Khatri, who clinched two golds -- one each in women´s 57 kg and open category -- and Lalitpur´s Diwakar Basnet, winner of men´s 55 kg, were adjudged the best players of the two-day event held in commemoration of former judo player Lokendra Shrestha.



Sunil Nagarkoti of Nuwakot and Sushila Adhikari of NPC claimed the title for best ippon (knockout) in the men´s and women´s category respectively.



The top three teams bagged a purse of Rs 5,000, Rs 3,000 and Rs 1000 respectively. Nepal Judo Association President Deepak Harsha Bajracharya handed Rs 1,000 each to the best players and distributed trophies and certificates to the winners.



Altogether 150 players of 27 teams had participated in the tournament organized jointly by the Nepal Judo Association and the District Judo Association Saptari.
