KATHMANDU, April 6: A 3-1 defeat against India means that Nepal’s women’s national football team won’t be able to qualify for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Japan.
Nepal’s defeat to India is its second consecutive loss. Earlier, Nepal was defeated 3-1 by the host nation, Myanmar. Nepal will now play against Indonesia, its last group stage game on Tuesday.
Nepal, India, Indonesia and Myanmar were in Group A. On November 2018, Nepal had qualified for the second round after a 1-1 draw against Bangladesh, India and Myanmar. Nepal managed to set its place into the second phase of qualification as top three teams from the group.
The 5th edition of the AFC Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament, the quadrennial international football competition is organized by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) to select women national teams from Asia for the Olympic football tournament.
The top two teams of the tournament will qualify for the 2020 Summer Olympics women’s football tournament in Japan as the AFC representatives, together with Japan which is already qualified for the Olympics as the host nation.
