Tokyo Olympics: Judo Player Soniya Bhatta fails to qualify to next round

KATHMANDU, July 24: Soniya Bhatta, a Judo player representing Nepal in the 32nd Summer Olympics, currently underway in Tokyo, Japan,  lost her first match against Russian player Irina Dolgova after meeting her in the round of 32 elimination match under 48-kg weight group.

KATHMANDU, July 24: Soniya Bhatta, a Judo player representing Nepal in the 32nd Summer Olympics, currently underway in Tokyo, Japan,  lost her first match against Russian player Irina Dolgova after meeting her in the round of 32 elimination match under 48-kg weight group. 


Soniya Bhatta, 19,  is currently ranked 127th in the judo world rankings, while Irina Dolgova is placed 9th.

The match between the two players went on for a minute and 16 seconds. Soniya was selected in the Olympics through a wild card. Earlier Soniya had won a bronze medal in the 13th South Asian Games which was held in Nepal in 2019.  


With this, Gaurika Singh and Alex Shah in the swimming category and Saraswati Chaudhary in athletics have yet to compete in their respective upcoming games. Singh will be competing in the women's 100 meters freestyle, Shah in the men’s 100 meters freestyle and Chaudary in the women's 100 meters race.
