Nepal finishes 5th in Zurkhaneh

KATHMANDU, Aug 18: Nepal claimed a total of three bronze medals in the Fourth Asian Zurkhaneh Sports Championship as Kamal Shrestha and Ananta Aryal won a bronze medal each on the last day of the championship on Sunday at the covered hall of Dasharath Stadium.



Nepal had earlier won a bronze in the team event on Saturday. With three bronze medals in its kitty, Nepal finished fifth in the championship. Iran, Iraq, Pakistan and India claimed the top four positions respectively.[break]



In the event contested by nine countries, Malaysia finished sixth while the Philippines, Thailand and Sri Lanka took the seventh to ninth positions respectively.

On Sunday, Aryal took bronze in Chakra Chamini and Shrestha in Sang categories. Earlier on Saturday, Nepal and Pakistan had finished joint third in the team event.

Milan Rana was the skipper while Anuj Singh Shrestha, Aryal, Kamal Shrestha, Biplav Shahi, Deepesh Makaju Shrestha and Sandip Lama were the members of the Nepali team that earned a total of 1012 points.



Iran defeated India for gold in the 90 kg weight category on Sunday while Pakistan and the Philippines secured bronze. In the 80-90 kg section, Pakistan, Iraq and Malaysia won gold, silver and bronze medals respectively. India and the Philippines claimed the top two positions in the 70-80 kg section while Iran and Iraq finished joint third. In the 60-70 kg category, India defeated Pakistan for gold while Iran and Thailand took bronze.
