KATHMANDU, Jan 6: The Embassy of Nepal in South Africa has requested Nepali citizens aspiring for jobs in South Africa to visit the country only after obtaining a work permit according to the prevailing laws of the Government of Nepal.

According to the laws of South Africa, there is a legal provision to employ foreign nationals only when there is a special requirement for specialized human resources in 140 sectors and those jobs cannot be undertaken by the citizens of South Africa.

The embassy has drawn attention to the fact that millions of rupees are being taken from Nepali citizens under the illusion that they will be offered high-income and lucrative jobs in South Africa which will further help them get easy access to Europe and America.

Such Nepali citizens are brought to South Africa through various cities of India (New Delhi, Mumbai), the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Tanzania, Mozambique, Kenya, Malawi, Mauritius, Rwanda, Congo and other countries and are left in the lurch. In some cases, they are left in extreme conditions in the transit countries, according to the embassy.

The embassy has requested Nepalis going for employment to be aware of such illegal activities, making it clear that the act of engaging in foreign employment or other similar temptations and taking a large amount of money to bring a person to a foreign country is punishable by the law.

Since the tourist visa issued by the High Commissioner and Consulate General of the Republic of South Africa in India is only for the purpose of arriving in South Africa on a travel visit, it is restricted to engage in employment on the basis of tourist visa.

Since it is illegal to engage in any kind of employment while on a tourist visa, the embassy has warned that violation of the purpose of such visa will lead to one’s arrest and deportation in  addition to fine and punishment as per the laws of South Africa.

The embassy said that since it requires visas for entering any foreign country, it is misleading to assume that it is easy to enter Europe, America and other countries from South Africa.
