BIRGUNJ, April 4: Local residents of Nijgadh in Bara district killed a neelgai (or blue bull), an endangered species, Saturday morning. The incident comes in the wake of a large number of wildlife starting to move out of their sanctuaries due to prolonged drought and fires. [break]

According to the Area Forest Office, Nijgadh, a group of locals at Nijgadh-6 killed the pregnant neelgai, which was straying out of Parsa Wildlife Reserve in search of water, with home-made arms.

A team of police personnel and officials from the forest office reached the incident site soon after receiving information that locals numbering about a dozen were trying to kill the animal. Forest Officer Ram Shraya Yadav said the locals fled soon after the team reached the site.

Police have seized the carcas of the neelgai and arrested one person in connection with the killing. Arrested Gobinda Majhi of Nijgardh-6 has admitted that they killed the neelgai for meat.

The neelgai is the largest of the Asiatic antelopes. They have a life span of 20-30 years, and they spend most of their time in the open jungles and scrubby grasslands. An adult bull weighs about 220 kg, while the cows weighs about 180 kg and a calf about 7 kg at birth.

Action will be taken against the arrested man as per the Wildlife Protection Act 2029 B.S, according to Parsa Wildlife Reserve.
